Le Marais in Paris

13 places for Le Marais in Paris, picked by creators — with what they said.

• Marché couvert des Enfants Rouges — Mark Wiens, TOPJAW, Messinger Guides
Introduced as the oldest food market in Paris and a place to eat some seriously iconic food.
• Caractère de Cochon — Mark Wiens, Locavore Eats
A thick layer of butter, paper-thin folds of ham, and a baguette that's crackling outside and pillowy inside — a combination he says "gives you a whole new perspective on the ham sandwich." Refined, best-in-class, and highly recommended.
Heads up: Both versions — the cooked ham and the aged ham — are excellent, so he suggests trying both (pick whichever suits your mood).
• The Cambridge Public House — TOPJAW
A spicy margarita riff made with gochujang and carrot — "one of the best cocktails I've ever had."
• Les enfants du marché — Condé Nast Traveler
Named the escargot the most French dish in France and their top pick, praising its buttery, hazelnut-like flavor, the balance of sourness and sweetness in the foie gras and smoked eel dish, and the fresh mustard.
Heads up: Wine prices range from €40 to €2,000, so if you don't want an expensive bottle, mention it ahead of time.
• LULU Crêperie — Mark Wiens
A thin, delicate buckwheat galette with melted cheese, a caramelized cheese crust on the bottom, fragrant sautéed mushrooms and ham, and crisp greens — a perfectly balanced plate he described as "unbelievably good."
Heads up: The portion is far bigger than expected — this is a full meal, not a snack.
• JANET by Homer - Marais — Locavore Eats
The bread is griddled in plenty of butter, and the egg salad sandwich and caramelized onion pastrami sandwich were rich and juicy enough to bring New York to mind.
• L'Aller Retour Marais — Les Frenchies
The quality of the meat comes through clearly, seasoned perfectly and cooked exactly to order, and the bone marrow scooped from a big bone is simple but excellent.
• Candelaria — TOPJAW
A flagbearer for Paris's hidden bar scene — an atmospheric cocktail bar tucked behind a taqueria, still packed 15 years on.
Heads up: The entrance is a taco shop; you have to go through the white door at the back to reach the bar.
• Sacha Finkelsztajn - La Boutique Jaune — Jeremy Jacobowitz
Said the dough packed with fruit and nuts wasn't too sweet and had a nice crumbly texture, and that the salmon sandwich — with lox, cream cheese, and pickles on soft bread somewhere between challah and bagel — was a can't-fail combination.
Heads up: Everything looks delicious, so it's overwhelming to choose, and mentioned that the pastrami is actually more famous.
• L'As du Fallafel — Jeremy Jacobowitz
Said the falafel was crispy on the outside without ever being dry, with a strong tahini flavor, and that the creamy fried eggplant in the middle was the best part.
Heads up: Usually has a line, so it's best to go right when it opens; the inside is dark, and if you get takeout, the filling overflows so much that eating it by hand is hard — a fork may be needed.
• Michalak — Lucile
An excellent flan with vanilla cream and a hint of rum; mille-feuille is a common dessert, but few places make it in-house like this, and it tasted genuinely great
• Chez Alain Miam Miam — Condé Nast Traveler
Briefly recommended as a place for a really excellent sandwich.
• Bo&Mie — Locavore Eats
The raspberry croissant was as good as it looked, the praline pastry had buttery layers and a hazelnut chocolate filling, and the kouign-amann was the crispiest, most buttery they've ever had.
Heads up: They suggest ordering a coffee with the plain croissant so you can dunk it.
